SUPERMARKET – Stockholm Independent Art Fair is an international art fair for artist-run initiatives. Supermarket is dedicated to exhibiting artist-run spaces, artists’ collectives, nomadic spaces and independent artists’ initiatives of all shapes and from around the world. The key aim is to display unique projects, create opportunities for new local and international networks and share the strengths of the independent art world with a large audience. The art fair exhibition is accompanied by the public Talks and Performance programme with invited performance artists and speakers from Sweden and abroad. Supermarket takes place annually in Stockholm, Sweden.
Supermarket has been arranged in Stockholm since 2007 by a small group of organisers most of whom are artists themselves. Supermarket is a development of Minimarket, which was held in Konstnärshuset (The Artists’ House) in February 2006 in reaction to the new commercial art fair Market. Over the years the project has rapidly evolved from exhibiting a modest group of local initiatives to a full-fledged international art exhibition that firmly established Stockholm on the art world map.
Supermarket has featured exhibitors from more than 60 countries, all part of a growing international trend of artist-run galleries, project spaces, artist collectives and other artists’ initiatives.
With its vibrant events programme, Supermarket is not just a regular art fair. Besides the main exhibition we offer the public Supermarket Talks & Performance programme, Supermarket Meetings, the Professional Networking Participants programme, Supermarket Forum and our internationally distributed Supermarket Art Magazine.
What are artist-run initiatives?
Supermarket’s goal is to strengthen the position of artist-run initiatives on the local and international art scene. Self-organised, artist-run art initiatives – initiatives run by artists – are characteristic of their non-institutional ways of organisation, flat hierarchy and often experimental formats. They comprise a widespread and important part of the contemporary art scene, yet their visibility and awareness of their function in the art sector remain low among general public. Artist-run initiatives exist all over the world in a variety of formats and structures.
Why an art fair for artist-run initiatives?
It is becoming increasingly common for artists to take matters in their hands and set up galleries and project spaces. Supermarket provides a platform for such artist-run initiatives. The goal is to be a place where wider public can become a part of what is happening on the artist-run scene. Supermarket offers the visitors an exhibition with unexpected meetings and experiences rather than focus on sales.
Sponsors are welcome to support and participate in Supermarket – a must-attend art event every year. Different levels of sponsorship are available. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org requesting sponsorship information.
Often some of our exhibitors have insufficient funding. Some come from countries without funding structures. If you would like to be the benefactor of a space, please contact us at email@example.com for proposals. Even a small donation can make a big difference.
