What are artist-run initiatives?
Supermarket’s goal is to strengthen the position of artist-run initiatives on the local and international art scene. Self-organised, artist-run art initiatives – initiatives run by artists – are characteristic of their non-institutional way of organisation, flat hierarchy and often experimental formats. They comprise a widespread and important part of the contemporary art scene, yet their visibility and awareness of their function in the art sector remain low. Artist-run initiatives exist all over the world in a variety of formats and structures.
Why an art fair for artist-run initiatives?
It is becoming increasingly common for artists to take matters in their hands and set up galleries and project spaces. Supermarket provides a platform for such artist-run initiatives. The goal is to be a place where wider public can become a part of what is happening on the artist-run scene. Supermarket offers the visitors an exhibition with unexpected meetings and experiences rather than focus on sales.
Who is eligible to present artworks at Supermarket?
Artist-run galleries regularly staging public exhibitions in their own exhibition spaces and other artists’ initiatives that arrange exhibitions and events with invited artists can apply to exhibit at Supermarket. Individual artists or artists’ groups founded only for applying to Supermarket will not be considered.
