SUPERMARKET – Stockholm Independent Art Fair
An international artist-run art fair for artist-run galleries and other artists' initiatives.
The goal of SUPERMARKET, the international artist-run art fair, is to provide a showcase for artists' initiatives from all over the world and to create opportunities for new networks in the Swedish as well as the international art scene.
SUPERMARKET has been arranged since 2007 by a small group most of whom are artists themselves. Supermarket is a development of Minimarket, which was held at Konstnärshuset in February 2006 in reaction to the new commercial art fair Market.
Initiated and organised by artists, this project has rapidly evolved from a modest group of local initiatives to a full-fledged international art exhibition that has made its mark and helped firmly establish Stockholm on the art world map.
SUPERMARKET started in small scale as MINIMARKET in 2006 in an art nouveau palace, the following year it became SUPERMARKET, with international presence in the same site, 2008 it moved to a run-down industrial space, then to a newly built first-class designer hotel (Clarion Hotel Stockholm) and since 2010 to the very heart of Stockholm - Kulturhuset (House of Culture).
International network
SUPERMARKET has featured exhibitors from more than 35 countries, all part of a growing international trend of artist-run galleries, project spaces, artist collectives and other artists' initiatives.
Offside programme
With an offside programme SUPERMARKET is not just a regular art fair. Besides the main exhibition we offer Supermarket TALKS, RED SPOT Performance Stage, Supermarket MEETINGS, Super-TV and our internationally distributed Supermarket Art Magazine.
TALKS
Talks started in 2007 as an unbiased place for talks, presentations, performances and debates on contemporary art. Talks has over the years developed into a 3-day seminar on issues relating to visual arts in general. The themes have been ‘Art of the Future’ (2009), ‘Documentation/Non-documentation’ (2010), ‘The Absent Hub’ (2011), ‘The waiting room of Eternity’ (2012) and 'Happiness' (2013). More info >>
RED SPOT
Performance art has been a part of SUPERMARKET since beginning, increasing year by year. In 2012 a stage for stage performance in the black-box theatre space called 'Hörsalen' was created. Live Action Göteborg, Lokal_30, Warsaw, No Budget Performance, Stockholm Fringe Fest and PAiN – Performance Art in Norbotten have been important contributors to the programme. More info >>
Supermarket MEETINGS
Since 2010 SUPERMARKET arranged Meetings, a non-public program which allows participating artists and artists working as exhibition organisers, project managers and other professionals to meet and discuss various issues surrounding their gallery and the wider art world. Since establishing interpersonal relations between art professionals is fundamental, we hope that these meetings will plant the seeds of new international collaborations. More info >>
SUPER-TV
In order to reach outside the venue, and to those who are unable to visit Stockholm, SUPERMARKET has been expirmenting with different kinds of broadcasting. Super-TV presents short interviews and glimpses bringing sharp insight into the heart of SUPERMARKET since 2010. Super-TV is broadcasted on the web by V-art live, a virtual cultural arena, focusing on the creation of new experiences and the artistic creativity.
SUPERMARKET Art Magazine
Since the first SUPERMARKET in 2007, an exhibition catalogue is released which bounds together since 2011 with the artist-run Supermarket Art Magazine. With submissions of our network around the world, connected to the theme of the Talks programme. More info >>
Why an art fair for artist-run galleries?
It is becoming increasingly common for artists to take matters into their own hands and set up galleries and project spaces. SUPERMARKET is an arena for such artist-run initiatives. The aim is for SUPERMARKET to be a place where a wider public can become a part of what is happening on the artist-run scene. SUPERMARKET wants to offer the visitor an exhibition with unexpected meetings and experiences rather than focusing on sales.
